What Laos has to offer
Every meal for the people of Laos is a sticky-rice meal Kau Niau, this staple served at room temperature in a woven basket called a thip khao. Watch the devotee Buddist in the mornings waiting in line in a line to give monks their day’s allowance of sticky rice, in a tradition called Tak Bat.
Whether you call it Laap or Larb, this traditional dish retains its essential Laos identity despite its popularity in Thai restaurants. Enjoy Laap, essentially it consists of chopped meat and innards, tourists are best to have it freshly cooked, however, purists serve it bloody and raw!
Take a visit to the city of Luang Prabang and try a serving of khao nom krok for a perfect end to your night-market shopping jaunt! Vendors make a batter of rice flour, sugar, and coconut milk, cook it in a cast-iron custom frying pan, then serve it hot – delicious!
